The events of the past few weeks have given me opportunity to reflect on what the people of Fundy Royal expect of me as a representative and what Canadians expect of our government. I believe Canadians, quite simply, want to know that their representatives hear them and they want to have faith that their government is working in their best interest.
My community has supported me from a young age by helping me build the confidence to believe that I could be an advocate for our community, that I could contribute to our government’s policies and laws, and that I deserved their trust to be a champion for Fundy Royal as the first woman ever elected in this riding.
It is an honour to have joined a group of Members of Parliament with a vast array of perspectives, experiences, and opinions who demonstrate every day that they too are committed to doing the best for the people they represent and for our country, including the Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould and the Honourable Jane Philpott. I appreciate all that Ms. Wilson-Raybould and Ms. Philpott have brought to the table and am disappointed that they were not able to find a path forward as members of cabinet and appreciate that this must have been a difficult decision for them to make.
My experience has been, as a member of this government, that with every decision made there is a tremendous amount of deliberation and pressure to get it right. That being said, I have confidence that cabinet, led by Justin Trudeau, will continue to take thoughtful decisions that focus on Canadians. Decisions that have and will continue to have real impact in the lives of people in Fundy Royal: a growing economy that is allowing more opportunity for everyone to succeed, significant drops in poverty rates across the country, boil water orders being lifted in our communities, and a concerted effort to fight climate change. These are the actions of a government focused on Canadians, one that will always stand up for Canadian workers and the importance of the rule of law and judicial independence.
I want to assure my constituents that they can be confident in our democratic system that not only guides our elected representatives but also has the mechanisms to ensure accountability. These mechanisms include the independent Conflict and Ethics Commissioner and Standing Committees of Parliament.
Over the coming weeks, both the Ethics Commissioner and the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights will continue to hear different perspectives. I know there are still more questions to be answered in the coming days and weeks.
I will remain focused on working towards enriching the lives of the people in Fundy Royal and working to ensure that our children have the opportunity to stay home and prosper because of our vibrant communities and a growing economy that works for everyone.
-Alaina Lockhart, Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal
