Helping Youth in Our Community Succeed

Minister Petitpas Taylor and MP Lockhart Focus on the Wellness of Our Youth

November 16, 2018             Fundy Royal, New Brunswick

Yesterday, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Health and Alaina Lockhart, Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal toured Fundy Royal focusing on the well-being of youth in the area. Minister Petitpas Taylor was impressed by the impactful work being done.

Fifth grade students at the École des Pionniers participated in a Question and Answer session with the two focused on mental and emotional health, work-life balance, and general well-being. Students also took the opportunity to ask questions about Official Languages and the actions of the Government of Canada to support minority communities.

This session coincided with a pilot project the class is currently engaged in on mindfulness as a means to improve students’ mental and emotional health. Part of the pilot includes students practicing mindfulness four times a day.

Minister Petitpas Taylor and MP Lockhart also visited Portage Atlantic near Cassidy Lake where residents provided them with a guided tour of the facility while explaining the principals of the therapeutic community environment framework that has proved to be very effective in helping youth work through underlying issues related to substance abuse. Much of the conversation focused on the challenges of returning to everyday life after the completion of the program and the importance of developing social competencies and supports.

Our Government is committed to seeing our youth succeed, and ensuring that all Canadians have the tools they need to live healthy, happy, and productive lives. It is important to give youth the opportunity to share their perspectives on tough issues, like mental health and addictions. These are the leaders of the future.

Thanks to on the ground organizations, like Portage Atlantic, and community leaders, like the teachers at École des Pionniers, youth are better prepared for their future. By working together with organizations and communities, we can help to ensure our children can prosper in the beautiful place we call home.

“It was my pleasure to join my colleague, MP Alaina Lockhart in Fundy Royal today to raise awareness about the importance of healthy living and our youth. I commend the amazing work being done in schools as well as at Portage Atlantic to provide the guidance, skills, and purpose that will serve our youth well.”The Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor Minister of Health

“Today our Minister of Health, Ginette Petitpas Taylor had the opportunity to hear directly from youth in Fundy Royal and see the impact of Portage Atlantic has in helping youth turn around their lives. I am proud that our government continues to provide support for our youth and for all Canadians to ensure they live their best life.” Alaina LockhartParliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Official Languages and La Francophonie Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal

“The drug crisis has the potential to have a negative effect on future generations. Portage Atlantic works to help youth have options leading to a more successful and fulfilling life. Applied prevention, which can include long-term rehabilitation for youth, mothers and children or adults, can give hope to those who struggle to break the cycle of substance abuse." Dr. Russell King Portage Atlantic Board Chairperson

“Having MP Lockhart and Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor visit our school was an excellent opportunity for our students to ask questions close to their heart and learn more about their positions as elected officials. Thanks to MP Lockhart, the visit was very enjoyable with great discussions. It was our pleasure to welcome them!” Anik Duplessis Principal of École des Pionniers
