Hillsborough Residents to Benefit from Upgrades to Local Recreational Facilities

Hillsborough, New Brunswick —Investing in recreational infrastructure helps communities come together and stay active. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick recognize that strategic investments in infrastructure—including funding for recreational projects—play a key role in supporting dynamic communities while creating good jobs that help grow the middle class.

Today, Alaina Lockhart, Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Cathy Rogers, Regional minister for Greater Moncton and southeastern New Brunswick, and His Worship Barry Snider, Mayor of Hillsborough announced joint funding to upgrade the Hillsborough Arena.

The governments of Canada and New Brunswick are each contributing over $500,000, to this project through the Small Communities Fund, representing two-thirds of the estimated $1.5 million total project cost.

The Hillsborough Arena is approximately 40 years old and in need of significant upgrades. The contributions announced today will be used to replace the ice refrigeration system, install new rink boards, glass, and netting. The upgrades also include a new roof and general electrical upgrades.

Once complete, friends and families in the Village of Hillsborough will be able to participate in community activities and connect with one another in a safe and modern space.

  • Through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan, the Government of Canada will invest more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada’s rural and northern communities.
  • $25.3 billion of this funding will support social infrastructure in Canadian communities.
  • This investment complements the Atlantic Growth Strategy, a 2-year federal-provincial action plan aimed at stimulating economic growth in the region through five priority areas:
    • Skilled workforce/Immigration;
    • Innovation;
    • Clean growth and climate change;
    • Trade and investment;
    • Infrastructure.
